Wedding Vendor Tip Calculator
Calculate appropriate tips for wedding vendors.
Covers caterers, DJs, photographers, florists, and other service providers.
Wedding vendor tipping is not always mandatory, but it’s a meaningful way to acknowledge exceptional service on one of the most important days of your life. Knowing appropriate amounts prevents awkward under-tipping or unnecessary over-tipping.
The Tipping Formula:
Tip = Service cost × Tip percentage
Or use flat-rate guidelines where percentage doesn’t scale well (e.g., very expensive photography).
Standard Wedding Vendor Tip Ranges (US, 2024):
| Vendor | Tip Guideline | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Catering staff (per server) | $20–$50 each | Check if gratuity already included |
| Catering manager / banquet captain | $100–$200 | If not in contract |
| DJ | $50–$150 | More for exceptional service |
| Band (per musician) | $25–$50 each | 5-piece band = $125–$250 total |
| Photographer | $50–$200 | Tip assistant separately |
| Videographer | $50–$150 | |
| Hair and makeup (per stylist) | 15–20% | Same as salon standard |
| Officiant | $50–$100 (secular) | Clergy: donation to their house of worship |
| Florist | $20–$50 | Optional — usually a fee-based service |
| Limo / transport driver | 15–20% of fare | |
| Venue coordinator | $50–$150 | If not a salaried employee |
Worked Example:
Wedding with:
- 4 catering servers × $30 = $120
- 1 DJ at $150
- Photographer $150 + assistant $75
- Hair and makeup (2 stylists): $200 total × 20% = $40
Total tips: $120 + $150 + $225 + $40 = $535
Practical Tips:
- Prepare tip envelopes before the wedding day: labeled with vendor names and amounts
- Have the best man or maid of honor distribute tips on the day so the couple isn’t handling cash
- Check contracts carefully: “service charges” of 18–22% often go to the venue, not staff
- Tipping is not required if service was genuinely poor: but communicate issues directly first
