Pace Conversion

Running pace is typically expressed as minutes per mile (min/mi) or minutes per kilometer (min/km). Converting between the two is essential for runners using international race results or training plans.

Conversion formulas: min/km = min/mi x 0.6214 min/mi = min/km x 1.6093

To convert pace to speed: Speed (mph) = 60 / pace (min/mi) Speed (km/h) = 60 / pace (min/km)

Race finish time estimates: Once you know your pace, multiply by race distance:

  • 5K = 3.107 miles / 5 km
  • 10K = 6.214 miles / 10 km
  • Half Marathon = 13.109 miles / 21.097 km
  • Marathon = 26.219 miles / 42.195 km

What affects pace: Training level, terrain, elevation, weather conditions, and fatigue all influence your pace. A 30-60 second per mile difference between training pace and race pace is normal.
