Fair Rent Split Calculator
Calculate a fair rent split among roommates based on room size.
Each person pays proportionally to the space they use.
Fair Rent Split
Fair rent splitting divides rent proportionally by room size:
Person's Share = Total Rent × (Their Room Size / Total of All Room Sizes)
This method is fairer than splitting equally because larger rooms cost more.
Example: $2,400/month rent, three rooms of 150, 120, and 100 sq ft:
- Total room area = 370 sq ft
- Room A (150 sq ft): $2,400 × 150/370 = $973/month
- Room B (120 sq ft): $2,400 × 120/370 = $778/month
- Room C (100 sq ft): $2,400 × 100/370 = $649/month
Tips:
- Rooms with private bathrooms or better views may warrant a premium
- Common areas are shared equally — only bedrooms differ
- Consider using this calculator when first signing a lease to avoid arguments
- If rooms are similar size, equal splitting is perfectly fair
