How Rabbit Age Is Calculated in Human Years
Rabbits age much faster than humans, especially in their first year. The conversion is not linear — rabbits mature rapidly early in life, then age more gradually.
Rabbit-to-Human Age Conversion Scale:
| Rabbit Age | Human Equivalent |
|---|---|
| 2 months | ~2 years |
| 6 months | ~16 years |
| 1 year | ~21 years |
| 2 years | ~27 years |
| 3 years | ~33 years |
| 5 years | ~45 years |
| 7 years | ~57 years |
| 10 years | ~75 years |
| 12+ years | ~83+ years |
Approximate Formula for Adult Rabbits (1+ years):
Human Age ≈ 21 + (Rabbit Years − 1) × 6
Worked Example: A 5-year-old rabbit:
- Human Age ≈ 21 + (5 − 1) × 6 = 21 + 24 = 45 human years
Life Expectancy by Breed:
- Small breeds (Dutch, Mini Rex): 10–12 years
- Medium breeds (Holland Lop): 8–12 years
- Large breeds (Flemish Giant): 5–8 years
- Indoor rabbits live significantly longer than outdoor rabbits on average
Key Health Milestones:
- Sexual maturity: 3–6 months depending on breed
- Considered “senior” at 6+ years (small breeds) or 4+ years (large breeds)
- Spayed/neutered rabbits typically live 2–3 years longer
- Annual vet checkups recommended; biannual after age 5
