Hamster Wheel Size Calculator

Find the minimum exercise wheel diameter for your hamster or small pet by species to prevent spinal arching — Syrian, dwarf, and gerbil sizes.

Wheel Recommendation

Hamster wheel size is the most important factor in preventing spinal injury and encouraging natural running behavior.

A wheel that is too small forces the hamster to arch its back downward while running — this causes chronic spinal damage over time.

Minimum wheel diameter by species:

  • Syrian (golden) hamster: 28 cm (11 inches), absolute minimum; 30 cm preferred
  • Dwarf hamsters (Roborovski, Campbell, Winter White): 20–25 cm (8–10 inches)
  • Chinese hamster: 25 cm (10 inches)

Correct sizing check: When your hamster runs, its back should be flat or very slightly curved upward. Any downward arch means the wheel is too small.

Distance and exercise: Hamsters in the wild run 5–8 miles (8–13 km) per night. A 28 cm wheel has a circumference of approximately: Circumference = π × diameter = 3.1416 × 28 cm ≈ 88 cm

To cover 8 km the hamster must complete: Revolutions = 8,000 m ÷ 0.88 m ≈ 9,090 rotations per night

This illustrates why a smooth, silent wheel is essential — squeaking bearings will disturb your sleep!

Worked example: Syrian hamster, wheel diameter = 30 cm. Circumference = π × 30 = 94.2 cm. To run 10 km: 10,000 ÷ 0.942 ≈ 10,615 revolutions per night.

Wheel type recommendations:

  • Solid running surface: mesh or barred wheels trap toes and cause injury
  • Closed back or open back with side support, both are acceptable
  • Silent spinner bearings: mandatory for night-time use

Minimum cage size to fit a proper wheel: Syrian: at least 80 × 50 cm floor space. A cramped cage makes an oversized wheel impossible — always size cage first.
