Understanding fight record statistics:
A fight record is the fundamental metric of a combat sports career. It is expressed as Wins-Losses-Draws (W-L-D), with No Contests (NC) sometimes appended. Beyond the raw record, several derived statistics reveal a fighter’s style and effectiveness.
Key formulas:
Win Rate (%) = Wins ÷ Total Fights × 100
Finish Rate (%) = (KO/TKO Wins + Submission Wins) ÷ Total Wins × 100
KO Rate (%) = KO/TKO Wins ÷ Total Wins × 100
Submission Rate (%) = Submission Wins ÷ Total Wins × 100
Decision Rate (%) = Decision Wins ÷ Total Wins × 100
What the numbers mean:
| Statistic | Elite Level | Good | Average |
|---|---|---|---|
| Win rate | 80%+ | 65–80% | 50–65% |
| Finish rate | 70%+ | 50–70% | 30–50% |
| KO rate (striker) | 50%+ | 30–50% | 15–30% |
| Sub rate (grappler) | 50%+ | 30–50% | 15–30% |
Worked example:
A fighter with record 15-4-1 (7 KO, 5 SUB, 3 DEC wins):
- Total fights: 15 + 4 + 1 = 20
- Win rate: 15 ÷ 20 × 100 = 75%
- Finish rate: (7 + 5) ÷ 15 × 100 = 80%
- KO rate: 7 ÷ 15 × 100 = 46.7%
- Submission rate: 5 ÷ 15 × 100 = 33.3%
- Decision rate: 3 ÷ 15 × 100 = 20%
This fighter is a well-rounded finisher who slightly favors striking over grappling.
Context matters:
- A high decision rate does not mean a fighter is boring — it often indicates elite cardio, strong defense, and the ability to win rounds consistently.
- Early career losses against experienced opponents are expected and should not overshadow later improvement.
- A high finish rate with few fights may simply mean limited competition — look at the quality of opponents.
- In amateur boxing, bouts are scored by points. The concept of “finish rate” is less meaningful because fights are stopped more quickly by referees.
Professional vs. Amateur:
Amateur records are tracked separately. Many professional fighters have extensive amateur backgrounds (50–100+ amateur bouts in boxing) that are not reflected in their professional record. Always consider the full picture.
Historical benchmarks:
Some notable career win rates: Anderson Silva (77.1%), Georges St-Pierre (89.7%), Floyd Mayweather Jr. (100%), Manny Pacquiao (90.1%). These numbers represent decades of elite competition.
