Sunburn Recovery Time Calculator
Estimate sunburn healing time from burn severity and skin type.
Returns stage-by-stage recovery timeline and guidance on when to see a doctor.
Sunburn is an inflammatory response to ultraviolet (UV) radiation damage to the DNA in skin cells. Despite feeling like a surface injury, sunburn is actually a form of radiation damage that triggers an immune response — which is why it gets worse in the hours after sun exposure and why repeated severe burns increase lifetime skin cancer risk.
Sunburn Severity Grades
Grade 1: Mild (First Degree)
- Skin is red and warm to the touch
- Slight tenderness
- No blisters
- Recovery time: 3–5 days
- The redness peaks at 12–24 hours after exposure
Grade 2: Moderate (Second Degree Superficial)
- Intense redness, significant pain
- Skin may swell
- Small blisters may begin forming
- Recovery time: 5–10 days
- Peeling typically begins around day 3–5
Grade 3: Severe (Second Degree Deep)
- Large blisters, severe swelling
- Skin may feel numb (nerve endings affected)
- Possible chills, fever, nausea (sun poisoning)
- Recovery time: 10–21 days
- Medical attention recommended
Grade 4: Extreme / Sun Poisoning
- Covers large areas of the body
- High fever, dizziness, dehydration, confusion
- Immediate medical attention required
- Recovery: 2–6 weeks
Recovery Timeline
Regardless of severity, sunburn recovery follows stages:
- Hours 0–6: Redness and heat increase
- Hours 6–24: Peak inflammation, worst pain
- Days 2–3: Heat fades, itching begins
- Days 3–7: Peeling starts (a sign of repair)
- Days 7–21: New skin emerges, sensitivity remains
Key Recovery Tips
Drink extra water — UV exposure causes dehydration. Apply aloe vera or a fragrance-free moisturiser. Take ibuprofen to reduce inflammation. Do NOT pop blisters. Stay out of the sun until fully healed. Avoid tight clothing over burned areas. Wear SPF 30+ sunscreen once healed — new skin is extra sensitive.
