Mulch Depth Calculator
Calculate mulch depth and cubic yards from garden area and plant type.
Returns volume for wood chips, bark, straw, and rubber mulch with seasonal guidance.
How Mulch Depth and Quantity Are Calculated
Mulch suppresses weeds, retains moisture, and regulates soil temperature. The right depth maximizes these benefits without suffocating roots.
Mulch Volume Formula:
Volume (m³) = Area (m²) × Depth (m)
Converting to Bags:
Most bagged mulch sold in 60L (0.06 m³) bags.
Bags Needed = Volume (m³) / 0.06
Recommended Mulch Depths:
| Mulch Type | Minimum Depth | Maximum Depth |
|---|---|---|
| Wood chips/bark | 7 cm | 10 cm |
| Shredded leaves | 5 cm | 8 cm |
| Straw | 8 cm | 15 cm |
| Gravel/stone | 5 cm | 8 cm |
| Fine compost | 3 cm | 5 cm |
Worked Example: Garden bed: 4m × 6m = 24 m², applying wood chip mulch at 8 cm depth:
- Volume = 24 × 0.08 = 1.92 m³
- Bags (60L each) = 1.92 / 0.06 = 32 bags
- Or order ~2 cubic yards bulk delivery (1 cubic yard ≈ 0.76 m³)
Critical Rules:
- Keep mulch 5–8 cm away from plant stems — contact causes crown rot and invites pests
- Do NOT exceed 10 cm — deep mulch creates anaerobic conditions and can harbor slugs
- Refresh organic mulch annually as it decomposes into soil
- Apply after soil has warmed in spring (not on cold soil — it insulates the cold in)
- Wet the soil before mulching to lock in existing moisture
