Crafting Cost Calculator

Calculate total material cost of crafting any item in RPGs and MMOs from ingredient quantities and prices.
Compare crafting cost vs auction price for profit.

Total Crafting Cost

Crafting cost analysis helps you decide whether to craft an item yourself or buy it from the market in RPGs and MMOs. The calculator totals up all material costs and compares them against the market price.

Formulas:

Total Crafting Cost = Σ (Material Quantity × Price per Unit)

Profit or Loss = Market Price of Finished Item - Total Crafting Cost

Profit Margin (%) = (Profit / Total Crafting Cost) × 100

What each variable means:

  • Material Name — the name of the crafting ingredient (for your reference).
  • Material Quantity — how many units of that material the recipe requires.
  • Price Each — the current market price or vendor price for one unit of the material.
  • Market Price of Finished Item — what the completed item sells for on the auction house or marketplace.

When to use this calculator: Use it before committing time and gold to crafting. If the crafting cost exceeds the market price, it is cheaper to just buy the item. If crafting is cheaper, you save gold or can sell the item for profit.

Practical example: You want to craft a Steel Sword. It requires 10 Iron Ore at 50 gold each (500g), 5 Leather Strips at 100 gold each (500g), and 2 Enchanting Dust at 200 gold each (400g). Total crafting cost = 1,400 gold. The sword sells for 2,000 gold on the market, so your profit = 600 gold (42.9% margin).

Tips and common mistakes:

  • Always factor in auction house fees (typically 5–15%) when selling crafted items. A 10% fee on a 2,000g item means you only receive 1,800g.
  • Consider the time cost of gathering materials yourself versus buying them.
  • Prices fluctuate throughout the day and week — check prices at off-peak times for better deals.
  • Batch crafting can be more efficient because of bulk material discounts.
  • Some recipes have a chance to fail or produce lesser items, so factor in the success rate.
