Net worth percentile places your accumulated wealth on a ranked scale relative to all other households or individuals in your country and age group. It answers the question: “Out of 100 people my age, how many have less wealth than me?”
Net Worth formula (the foundation): Net Worth = Total Assets − Total Liabilities
Assets include: cash, investments, retirement accounts, real estate equity, vehicles, business ownership, collectibles. Liabilities include: mortgage balance, auto loans, student loans, credit card debt, personal loans.
Percentile calculation (percentile rank formula): Percentile = (Number of people with less wealth ÷ Total population) × 100
In practice, this is calculated by comparing your net worth to published distribution data from surveys like the U.S. Federal Reserve’s Survey of Consumer Finances (SCF), updated every 3 years.
U.S. Net Worth by Percentile (2022 SCF, approximate):
| Percentile | Net Worth |
|---|---|
| 25th | $8,000 |
| 50th (median) | $192,700 |
| 75th | $597,900 |
| 90th | $1,589,300 |
| 99th | $11,040,000 |
Age-adjusted U.S. median net worth (2022):
- Under 35: $39,000
- 35–44: $135,600
- 45–54: $247,200
- 55–64: $364,500
- 65–74: $409,900
Worked example: A 38-year-old with $210,000 net worth: Compared to all U.S. adults → approximately 60th percentile (above median of $192,700) Compared to their age group (35–44, median $135,600) → approximately 65th–70th percentile — solidly above average for their cohort.
Key insight: Percentile comparisons are most meaningful within your age group, because wealth accumulates over time. A 60-year-old and a 30-year-old with the same net worth are in very different financial positions relative to their peers.
