Tip Splitter Calculator
Split a restaurant bill with tip among any number of people.
Enter the pre-tax total, tip percentage, and party size to see each person exact share to the cent.
Tip splitting calculates how much each person owes when a group shares a restaurant bill with tip. This is one of the most commonly needed everyday calculations.
Formulas:
Tip Amount = Bill × (Tip Percentage / 100)
Total with Tip = Bill + Tip Amount
Per Person = Total with Tip / Number of People
Tip Per Person = Tip Amount / Number of People
What each variable means:
- Total Bill: the pre-tip bill amount from the restaurant check.
- Tip Percentage: the gratuity percentage you want to leave, based on service quality.
- Number of People: how many people are splitting the bill evenly.
Common tip percentages (United States):
- 15%: adequate service
- 18%: good service
- 20%: great service (the most common tip for good experiences)
- 25%: exceptional or outstanding service
Practical example: A group of 4 friends has a $120 bill and wants to leave an 18% tip. Tip = $120 × 0.18 = $21.60. Total = $141.60. Per person = $141.60 / 4 = $35.40 each (with $5.40 tip per person).
When to use this calculator: Use it any time you dine out with friends and want to quickly figure out each person’s share. It saves the awkward mental math at the table.
Tips for group dining:
- Some restaurants add a mandatory gratuity (usually 18%) for parties of 6 or more: check the bill to avoid double-tipping.
- Consider rounding up each person’s share to the nearest dollar to keep things simple.
- If some people ordered significantly more expensive items (like a steak versus a salad), consider asking the server for separate checks or splitting proportionally rather than evenly.
- In many countries outside the United States, tipping customs are different: 10% or no tip at all may be the norm. Research local customs when traveling.
- Using payment apps like Venmo or PayPal makes it easy to split exact amounts without needing cash.
