Reading Speed Calculator
Calculate reading speed in words per minute and time to finish any book or article.
Enter word count to get slow, average, and fast completion times.
Reading speed is measured in words per minute (WPM) and determines how long any text will take you to finish.
Core formulas: WPM = Total Words Read ÷ Minutes Spent Reading Time to Finish (minutes) = Total Words in Book ÷ Your WPM Time to Finish (hours) = Time in Minutes ÷ 60
Where:
- Total Words Read = the word count of your test passage
- Minutes Spent = the exact time you spent reading that passage
- Total Words in Book = word count of the book or document you want to estimate
Average reading speeds by reader type:
| Reader Type | WPM | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Struggling reader | 100–150 | May re-read sentences |
| Average adult | 200–250 | Comfortable comprehension |
| Above average | 300–400 | Strong readers |
| Speed reader | 500–700 | Skimming and chunking techniques |
| World record | 1,000+ | Comprehension drops significantly |
Average word counts by book type:
- Short novel (e.g., The Great Gatsby): ~47,000 words
- Standard novel: 80,000–100,000 words
- Long epic (e.g., War and Peace): 580,000 words
- Average non-fiction: 60,000–80,000 words
- Children’s chapter book: 10,000–30,000 words
Worked example: You read a 500-word passage in 2 minutes → WPM = 500 ÷ 2 = 250 WPM. You want to read a 90,000-word novel. Time = 90,000 ÷ 250 = 360 minutes = 6 hours of reading time.
Reading for 30 minutes/day at 250 WPM:
- Words per session: 7,500
- Days to finish a 90,000-word novel: 12 days
Tips to improve WPM: Use a pointer or finger guide, eliminate sub-vocalization (saying words in your head), expand your visual span to read 2–3 words at once. Even modest improvements compound: going from 200 to 300 WPM cuts reading time by 33%.
