Gift Card Summary

Gift card tracking helps you keep tabs on all your cards so you can use them before they expire or get forgotten in a drawer. This calculator totals up to 5 gift card balances and shows your combined spending power.

Formula:

Total Balance = Card 1 + Card 2 + Card 3 + Card 4 + Card 5

Average Balance = Total Balance / Number of Cards

What each variable means:

  • Card Balance — the remaining dollar amount on each gift card. Check the back of the card for a phone number or website to verify your balance.

When to use this calculator: Use it to get a clear picture of how much gift card money you have available before shopping. It is especially helpful during the holidays when you may receive multiple cards, or when cleaning out your wallet and finding forgotten cards.

Practical example: You have three gift cards: $25 (Amazon), $50 (Target), and $15.47 (Starbucks). Total balance = $90.47. Highest card = $50, lowest = $15.47, average = $30.16.

Tips for gift card management:

  • Check balances regularly — unused cards lose value over time through inactivity fees in some cases.
  • Many retailers allow you to check balances online or through their mobile app.
  • Consider consolidating small balances by using them toward one purchase together.
  • In many US states, gift cards cannot legally expire, but promotional cards (given free with a purchase) may have different rules.
  • If a card has a very small remaining balance (under $5), some states require the retailer to give you cash back upon request.

Common mistake: Forgetting about partial balances. After making a purchase with a gift card, write the remaining balance on the card with a marker so you always know what is left. On average, about $15–$20 per household goes unused each year in gift cards.
