GPA Needed for Graduation calculates the minimum GPA you must earn in your remaining semesters to achieve a target cumulative GPA.
The formula:
Required GPA = (Target GPA × Total Credits - Current GPA × Completed Credits) / Remaining Credits
Where:
- Target GPA = the cumulative GPA you want to graduate with
- Total Credits = completed credits + remaining credits
- Current GPA = your current cumulative GPA
- Completed Credits = credit hours you have already finished
Common GPA targets:
- Graduation minimum: 2.0 (most schools)
- Dean’s List: 3.5+ (varies by school)
- Cum Laude: 3.5+
- Magna Cum Laude: 3.7+
- Summa Cum Laude: 3.9+
Understanding the results:
- If the required GPA is 4.0 or below: achievable, though a 4.0 means you need all A’s
- If the required GPA is above 4.0: mathematically impossible on a standard 4.0 scale
- If the required GPA is below your current GPA: you can afford some lower grades
Important considerations:
- A+ grades count as 4.0 at most schools (some give 4.33)
- Some schools use A+ = 4.0, A = 4.0, A- = 3.7, B+ = 3.3, B = 3.0, etc.
- Graduate school applications often look at upper-division GPA separately
- Retaking a course may replace the old grade at some schools, while others average both
Tips for raising your GPA:
- Take classes you are genuinely interested in (you will likely perform better)
- Use professor office hours and tutoring resources
- Consider taking lighter course loads if you need higher grades
- Some schools allow pass/fail options that do not affect GPA
The math is harsh in the later years. If you have 90 credits completed with a 2.5 GPA and need a 3.0 to graduate in 30 more credits, you would need a 4.0 in every remaining class. The earlier you start focusing on GPA, the more achievable your target becomes.
