Book Reading Time Calculator
Calculate reading time from page count, words per page, and reading speed in WPM.
Returns total time for slow (150), average (250), and fast (400 WPM) readers.
Book Reading Time Formula
The time it takes to read a book depends on three things: the total number of words, your reading speed, and the complexity of the material.
The Formula
Reading Time (minutes) = Total Words / Reading Speed (WPM)
Total Words = Page Count × Words Per Page
Where:
- WPM = words per minute (your personal reading speed)
- Words per page = varies by book format (typically 200–300 for printed books)
Average Reading Speeds by Skill Level
| Reader Type | Speed (WPM) | Description |
|---|---|---|
| Slow reader | 100–150 | Careful, deliberate reading |
| Average adult | 200–250 | Most people fall in this range |
| Above average | 300–400 | Experienced, frequent readers |
| Fast reader | 400–600 | Well-practiced speed readers |
| Speed reader | 600–1000 | Trained speed reading techniques |
| World record | 4,700 | Howard Berg (with comprehension) |
The average adult reads at approximately 238 WPM according to a 2019 meta-analysis published in the Journal of Memory and Language. Comprehension drops significantly above 600 WPM for most people.
Words Per Page by Format
| Format | Words Per Page |
|---|---|
| Mass market paperback | 250–300 |
| Trade paperback | 250–280 |
| Hardcover fiction | 250–300 |
| Academic textbook | 300–400 |
| Children’s chapter book | 150–200 |
| Large print | 150–180 |
| Comic/graphic novel | 50–100 |
| E-reader (default settings) | 200–250 |
Worked Example
A 350-page novel with 260 words per page, reader speed 300 WPM:
Total words = 350 × 260 = 91,000 words Reading time = 91,000 / 300 = 303 minutes = 5 hours 3 minutes
At the average speed of 238 WPM: Reading time = 91,000 / 238 = 382 minutes = 6 hours 22 minutes
Factors That Affect Reading Speed
- Material complexity: Technical or academic text is 30–50% slower than fiction
- Familiarity: Reading in your area of expertise is faster than unfamiliar topics
- Font size and formatting: Cramped text or unusual fonts slow reading by 10–20%
- Reading environment: Distractions, noise, and poor lighting reduce speed
- Time of day: Most people read fastest in the morning
- Screen vs. paper: Studies show paper reading is typically 5–10% faster than screen reading
How to Measure Your WPM
- Pick a page of average difficulty
- Set a timer for exactly 1 minute
- Read normally (don’t rush)
- Count the words you covered
- Repeat 3 times and average the results
