Gutter Length Calculator
Calculate total gutter length and downspout count for any roofline.
Enter eave lengths and roof sections to get material quantities and downspout spacing.
Gutter linear footage is calculated by measuring the total perimeter length of roof edges that require drainage. Proper gutter sizing and material quantity estimation prevents costly mid-project trips to the hardware store and ensures your drainage system handles peak rainfall effectively.
Core formulas: Total Gutter Length = Σ(All roof eave lengths requiring gutters) Downspouts needed = 1 per 20–40 linear feet of gutter (varies by rainfall zone) End caps = 2 per gutter run (one per end) Gutter connectors = Number of 10-ft sections − 1 per run
What each variable means:
- Linear feet — the length of gutter needed along each roof eave. Gutters are sold in 10-foot sections or as continuous seamless runs.
- Sections needed — total gutter length ÷ 10 ft per section, rounded up. Add 10% for waste.
- Downspouts — vertical pipes that carry water from the gutter to the ground. Standard spacing: one downspout per 20 ft of gutter in low-rainfall areas; one per 15 ft in high-rainfall areas.
- Hangers — brackets that attach gutters to the fascia board. Space every 24–36 inches. Required quantity = Total Length × 12 ÷ 30 (avg. spacing in inches).
Gutter sizing guide:
| Roof Area (sq ft) | Recommended Size | Flow Capacity |
|---|---|---|
| Up to 750 | 4-inch K-style | 1,700 gal/hr |
| 750–1,400 | 5-inch K-style | 2,500 gal/hr |
| 1,400–2,500 | 6-inch K-style | 3,800 gal/hr |
| Large commercial | 6-inch half-round | 3,200 gal/hr |
Gutter material cost comparison:
| Material | Cost per Linear Foot | Life Expectancy |
|---|---|---|
| Aluminum (most common) | $4–$9 | 20–30 years |
| Vinyl | $3–$6 | 10–20 years |
| Steel (galvanized) | $6–$12 | 20–30 years |
| Copper | $20–$40 | 50–100 years |
Worked example: A ranch house with: front eave 45 ft, rear eave 45 ft, left side 30 ft, right side 30 ft. Only front and rear receive gutters.
Total gutter: 45 + 45 = 90 linear feet 10-ft sections: 90 ÷ 10 = 9 sections (no waste needed for exact 90 ft) Downspouts (at 22.5 ft spacing): 90 ÷ 22.5 = 4 downspouts Hangers (at 30" spacing): 90 × 12 ÷ 30 = 36 hangers End caps: 4 runs × 2 = 8 end caps
At $7/ft aluminum: 90 × $7 = $630 in gutter material (before downspouts and labor).
