Astrological compatibility assesses the relationship potential between two people based on their zodiac signs and, in more detailed systems, their full natal charts. While not scientifically validated, billions of people use astrology as a framework for self-reflection and relationship insight.
Formula (simplified compatibility scoring): Compatibility Score = Elemental Harmony Score + Modality Score + Aspect Score
Element groups and harmony: The 12 zodiac signs are divided into four elements:
- Fire: Aries, Leo, Sagittarius
- Earth: Taurus, Virgo, Capricorn
- Air: Gemini, Libra, Aquarius
- Water: Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces
Elemental compatibility matrix:

Modality types:
- Cardinal (initiators): Aries, Cancer, Libra, Capricorn
- Fixed (stabilizers): Taurus, Leo, Scorpio, Aquarius
- Mutable (adapters): Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius, Pisces
Cardinal + Mutable = good balance. Fixed + Fixed = power struggles possible but intense loyalty.
Aspect compatibility (sun sign angle):
- Conjunct (0°, same sign): Intense, mirrored energy, can be too similar
- Sextile (60°, 2 signs apart): Easy, harmonious, friendly connection
- Square (90°, 3 signs apart): Tension and friction, challenging but growth-inducing
- Trine (120°, 4 signs apart): Flowing, natural ease, highest compatibility
- Opposition (180°, 6 signs apart): Magnetic attraction, complementary opposites
Worked example: Aries (Fire, Cardinal) + Sagittarius (Fire, Mutable):
- Elemental harmony: Fire + Fire = high (90 points)
- Modality: Cardinal + Mutable = good (75 points)
- Aspect: 240° apart = Trine = flowing (90 points)
- Overall score: ~85%, highly compatible
Important note: Professional astrologers use the entire natal chart — moon sign, rising sign, Venus, Mars, and planetary aspects — not just sun signs. Sun sign compatibility is a starting point, not the whole picture.
